Why aren't we feeling more shame about this?

Any reputation is only is as good as its actions in the present.

As a native Tennessean, I take personally the reputation of The Volunteer State and its residents. Historically, we are known for our resourcefulness, work ethic, and dedication to the virtues of humanity.

With the massive influx of residents to my home state over the past 20 years, the last of these elements of Tennessean’s long-standing reputation has been tested. Too often, I have seen where the incoming migrants have turned their back to embracing courtesy, self-restraint, and awareness.

After last week, I am afraid now “The Tennessee Way” has turned a very dark and shameful path.

On the early morning of Tuesday, December 3rd, a 22-year-old man, Austin David, got out of a car while traveling on Interstate 40 East just past Nashville International Airport. Apparently, he asked to get out after having an argument with his friend. Proceeding to walk eastward on the Interstate (with the flow of traffic), he was hit by a truck shortly after and knocked into a lane of traffic, where he was subsequently run over the several vehicles.

Investigators believe the hit-and-run occurred around 2 a.m. However, his remains were not noticed in the roadway until after 11 a.m.

This is a tragic, horrific incident. Initially, Nashville Metro PD did not provide Austin’s family with details when they inquired about his whereabouts after being told by the roommate that he exited the vehicle. Subsequently, his death became a homicide investigation.

Given the time span, it is hard to avoid imagining how own Austin’s body was hit overnight if nobody took the time to notice or stop until after 11 a.m.

Yes, this is a shameful moment for everyone involved. Just as the murder of Brian Thompson showed us the awful mentality held by many in our nation at present, the lack of awareness or consideration for Austin David is incredibly disturbing, not only because of the hit-and-run, but also the time afterward.

Shame should be on our minds, as well as repentance in this time. Events should as this should not be part of our landscape here in this country, and their existence embodies how rotten society has become. Sadly, this includes the State I grew up in, and the City where I was born.
